ROSES The rose, that most popular of all garden flowers is adored by everyone, both for it's beautiful colours and heady scents. With a bewildering variety to choose from, there is a rose to suit every garden. The society has many rose enthusiasts and we are proud to have amongst our members many who exibit at national level. We also benefit from those in our society who are widely known and respected by keen rosarians. This fund of knowledge and expertise is shared enthusiastically between novice and expert alike VEGTABLESWhat garden would be complete without its section for vegetables, even if it is only for summer salads. If you have wondered how to obtain those large exhibition types of vegetables, or are interested in improving the quality of your produce, on becoming a member of “Dublin 5”, you have stepped on the ladder to achieving your aims. DAHLIASThe Dahlia with its many flower forms, has been a flower with which Dublin 5 has had a long and illustrious association. At the “Garden Vista” Show, held in August, one can view this flower in all its splendour and see its value as a cut flower and for garden display. Again, the Society has among its ranks some of of the top Dahlia growers in Ireland, who are known and exhibit nationally and internationally. Their expertise and knowledge is always available and advice is readily given. So, if you have a small interest in Dahlias, be prepared for a full conversion on becoming a member of “Dublin 5”. SWEET PEASThe Victorians were the first to really appreciate the delicate appearance and delightful fragrance of the Sweet Peas, even though it was introduced to Britain from Sicily in 1699. The Sweet Pea is a rewarding plant, it takes up little space, is easy to grow and produces masses of blooms to brighten the garden or to use indoors. If the Sweet Pea is your special interest, you are in good company as many Society members are enthusiastic growers too. POT PLANTSEveryone has at least one Pot Plant in his or her possession. With the increase in the number of conservatories, greenhouses and porches, this aspect of gardening is attracting more interest each day. This interest is reflected in the “Dublin 5” calendar of lectures and shows FUCHSIASAs mentioned previously, Pot Plants feature strongly at “Dublin 5” shows. In particular Fuchsias. The 15 Classes in our Shows make it one of largest displays of this plant in the Country. Attracting entries from all over Ireland. FLORAL ARTAs well as gardeners who specialize in the cultivation of the flower types mentioned, we also have members who are interested in floral art. At our shows, we always find that it is one of the most popular exhibits. As a result of this popularity, floral art features strongly in our winter lecture programme. SHOWS“Dublin 5 “ holds three shows each year. The “Spring Show “, held in April, for all the spring flowering bulbs and plants; the “Rose and Sweet Pea Show “ held in July where Roses, Sweet Peas and Fuchsias feature prominently though not totally in their favour. Finally, in August, the “Garden Vista “ Show, where all the late flowers, Herbaceous, Dahlias, Gladioli, Fuchsias and Geraniums hold sway. ![]() ![]() © COPYRIGHT 2007 Dublin 5 Horticultural Society |
