Welcome to the Dublin 5 Horticultural Society
The society was established in 1957 for the local people of the area with the aim of promoting the growing of Flowers, Fruit and Vegetables. Over the years the society has grown and each year there are 3 shows for people to exhibit their produce. The shows are normally held at Channel College Coolock, although last year due to renovation work at Channel all the shows for the year 2004 were held at St. John of Gods girls national school, Kilmore road, Artane, Dublin 5. The society would like to thank staff at this school for making a hall available to the society at such short notice.
Each year the society holds 3 shows for it's members and anyone else who wishes to exhibit. It also holds forthnightly meetings, with talks on different gardening topics from renowned experts and organises outings to garden centres and gardens of distinction in the Irish Countryside.
The "Spring show" is held in April for all the spring flowering bulbs and plants. This is a one day show and is usually the smallest show in the society's calender.
The "Rose and Sweet Pea Show" is held in July where Roses, Sweetpea and Fuschias feature prominently though not totally in their favour.. Exhibition classes at this show usually include apart from the afore mentioned, Cut Flowers, Pot Plants, Homemade Jams, Homemade Breads/cakes and some early vegetable classes.
In August the annual "Garden Vista" show is held over two days. This show is late in the season so displays are usually of Dahilas, Roses, Gladioli, Pot Plants and the usual cookery classes. Although it is possible to have Sweetpea at this late stage in the season, they are usually of a poor quality and not quite show standard.
